Consumers are starting to take notice of the issues raised by research about the use of antibiotics in food animals. The discussions go beyond science and research, into the areas of consumer purchasing decisions and food marketing.

The Chicago Public Schools took a public policy stance in 2011 by serving local, antibiotic chicken in 473 of its schools. This action makes the statement that consumers have a preference for food that is free of antibiotics and is locally grown. Independent of the view of farmers, ranchers, or producers, consumers do have a voice and are influenced by how science and technology is positioned.

Consumers want to know more about farmers and ranchers approaches to growing food, food production, and delivery. Farmers and Ranchers want consumers to see how food is produced and understand the work involved. There are several food focused events that provide you the opportunity to tell your food / ag story.

The food conversations never stop! October 16 is World Food Day with a supporting focus on food from Blog Action Day, also on October 16. Then on October 24th there is Food Day. And on October 25-26 there is the Food System Summit.

Marla Schulman (@dvinmsm and @lifeafterkidstv) moderates the the Agvocacy 2.0 South by Southwest panel. She believes that farmers and ranchers connecting with consumers through social media is such a great way for people to learn more about food, agriculture, and the 2% of people in agriculture.

In order to connect with non-farmers and consumers, farmers and ranchers need to practice the art of story telling.

What is in a story? Let me start with this fact based statement:

Jed, male, 55 yrs, head of household, low income, seeking employment. Skills: Shooting, hunting. Resides in Arkansas. Immediate family household includes mother-in-law, 80 yrs, and one daughter, 25 yrs. Also has a second cousin, male, 26 yrs living in home. One pet ( dog).

Farmers and ranchers are using social media. While they aim to have fun, they also seek to bring to their ag stories to consumers and non-farm people.

At the end of August 2010 a group of farmers and ranchers came together to share their social media efforts to tell the story of how food is grown, raised, produced and delivered. The Agvocacy 2.0 Training , held at Dairy Management Inc's Chicago office, delivered information on how to use social media tools like blogs, Twitter, and Facebook to connect with the 98% of Americans that are not involved in agriculture.
