Consumers are starting to take notice of the issues raised by research about the use of antibiotics in food animals. The discussions go beyond science and research, into the areas of consumer purchasing decisions and food marketing.

The Chicago Public Schools took a public policy stance in 2011 by serving local, antibiotic chicken in 473 of its schools. This action makes the statement that consumers have a preference for food that is free of antibiotics and is locally grown. Independent of the view of farmers, ranchers, or producers, consumers do have a voice and are influenced by how science and technology is positioned.

Consumers want to know more about farmers and ranchers approaches to growing food, food production, and delivery. Farmers and Ranchers want consumers to see how food is produced and understand the work involved. There are several food focused events that provide you the opportunity to tell your food / ag story.

The food conversations never stop! October 16 is World Food Day with a supporting focus on food from Blog Action Day, also on October 16. Then on October 24th there is Food Day. And on October 25-26 there is the Food System Summit.

There are several hundred food related recalls per year. The ability to find where food originated and how consumers received it is key to quick responses.

What does food traceability mean? In the general sense, it means being able to know where your food comes from. But it also means that the data about the growth, transportation, and handling are available for analysis. Many people are aware of the need to trace food back to its source when an out break of E. coli or Listeria occurs.
